On a park bench
It was a hot saturday afternoon and I was in Jayanagar. My roommate (RM) and me had 45 minutes to kill. I was waiting at a signal when my RM noticed a park beside the road. He suggested that we spend the free time in the park rather than riding in the heat. I could think of nothing better.
We entered the park and looked around. There was one empty bench right at the entrance and we settled down on it. I tried to digest the surroundings. There were a lot of trees and benches arranged pretty haphazardly. There were lots of boulders everywhere. I looked at the bench right in front of me. There was a guy sitting on it completely engrossed in some number crunching activity. He had a lot of receipts and a calculator to help him. He did not look up when we came in.
On the bench to my right was a guy taking a nap. I first thought he was speaking on a mobile phone but then realised that it was just his hand over his ear. Maybe the clamness that was in the park was not sufficient. Just beside him was a guy sitting on the ground using a boulder for support. He had a book in his hand. Everytime he turned a page he would close his eyes for sometime. I could figure out if he was memorising something or just that every page put him to sleep.
On a bench right accross ours was a couple. They must have been in their mid thirties. The guy was talking animatedly and the lady just listening. My RM and me stared at them
RM : What is a couple doing in a park on a hot saturday afternoon? Do they have nothing better to do?
Me : I really cant say. But maybe when we get married we might realise the importance of spending quality time with our spouses!!
RM : I would rather be spending the afternoon sleeping than on a park bench.
Then entered a young couple. The guy ang gal were holding hands as they entered. The number crunching guy looked up but immediately went back to his numbers. The guy taking a nap didnt notice them. The guy who was pretending to study was glad to see a change in the environment. The guy was extremely thin and had long hair - something my mom would not have approved of. The gal was a bit on the plumpy side. RM and me just stared
RM : Look at that guy's hair.
Me : Hmmm....
RM : I cant understand today's youth. why do they have to grow their hair that long!
Me : Hmmm....
RM : Sometimes I feel that guys nowadays want to look like girls!!!
Me : Hmmm....The world is changing
The couple looked around for a bench and then not finding one, settled down on some boulders. They held hands for sometime but did nothing further. The guy who pretending to study went back to pretending. The number crunching guy went back to his numbers. I turned my attention to the guy who just entered the park in a hurry. Who would enter a park in a hurry? My curiosity piqued. As I wondered, they guy in a hurry just went to a corner of the park and started urinating.
Me : So thats why he was in a hurry!
RM : The world might be changing, but Indians will be the same!
Me : Hmm.....
Meanwhile the couple in the 30's got up from the bench. We stared at them. They started walking towards the entrance (also the exit!) It could have been the distance that they maintained or the formal tone in theit talk that just changed our perspective
RM : Do you really think they are married?
Me : Now I have some doubts. It looks like they are just friends
RM : Hmm...I feel they are having an affair
Me : Nah...I dont think so. They are colleagues and also good friends.
RM : Havent you heard of office romance
Me : Hmm....
We stood up to leave. I took a last look at the park. The young couple had settled down on the bench occupied by the 30's couple. The number crunching guy continued to crunch numbers. The guy taking a nap was now talking on his mobile phone. The guy pretending to study was now talking a nap. We walked towards the exit and in came another young couple. The gal had a bouquet of roses in her hands and had her other arm accross the guy's hips. RM and me looked at each other.
Nah, we couldnt stay on, our 45 minutes were up.
